Top 5 Reasons to paint your fireplace

Sometimes just the right reason can prompt us into taking action we would otherwise avoid. Here are five good reasons to stop procrastinating and throw a coat of paint on that gross, ugly, old fireplace you are sick of.

If you're on the fence about painting your fireplace you won't be after reading these reasons why you should!

You can’t bleach it. It won’t fit in the vat.

You can’t sell it. Craigslist insists you sell the house with it.

You can’t bulldoze it. You might scratch the hardwood.

You can’t blast it. Your ooze’s in the shop.

You can’t erase it. It’s a mistake of the past.

Your only option? Paint it. I’ve wanted to do all the above to my fireplace since we moved into this house two and a half years ago. Now, finally, I’m ready to undertake my only option. I’ve done the research and picked out the paint. But even though painting it is the mildest solution for renewing it, it’s still a little scary. I mean, once you paint over the original stone or brick there’s no going back. This post is a kind of “building up my nerve” post.

I found plenty of informative posts on Pinterest. Painting your fireplace is a darn popular thing to do considering the alternative. You can use latex or chalk paint, opaque or whitewash several different ways.

Some people used a primer for extra opaque coverage. Others didn’t. Some recommended special mortar/brick paint and sealers. Some stated their paint jobs have held up over time just fine using neither.

In the end, it just depends on what type of effect you want to achieve and how much time you want to spend achieving it.

For me, Erin’s (@Erin’s Art and Gardens ) fireplace update seemed perfect. The technique she used is simple and easy, but the effect is dramatic. All I need to do is mix up a wash of chalk paint then dry brush afterwards. For full details click on the link above.

Be sure to stop by later and see my new fireplace. I’ll be sharing some links to posts that I ran across detailing some of the different techniques, too. My courage is starting to build already!

Talking about courage, if you haven’t seen the movie “Love & Mercy” I highly recommend renting it. It is the compelling story of Brian Wilson’s struggle with mental illness, his musical genius, and his beautiful heart during his career with the Beach Boys.
